Traditional Conservation, Design, Craft and Building Skills

Good conservation practice is knowing when and how to repair a structure.

Training

I served an apprenticeship as a carpenter and jointer, this led to my interest in the history of craft skills.

After working with architect's practices and English Heritage I decided to specialise in conservation.

I have worked as a local authority Conservation Officer and I have a good understanding of legislation and possible sources of grant aid.

Research

I have completed a Churchill Fellowship studying early English building methods and the influence of craft traditions of Scandinavia and northern Europe.

My respect for the early craftsmen has led to my concern that repairs to historic building are undertaken with a good understanding of the original techniques and materials.

Traditional Building Craft Skills

My practical skills can be used not only to undertake craft work, but also to encourage and instruct less specialist craftsmen in traditional methods. I can advise on a one to one basis, or undertake training courses in the following skills:

  • Traditional Lime Mortars and Renders
  • Brick, Stone and Flint Work
  • Wattle and Daub
  • Mortar Analysis
  • Roofing
  • Timber and Joinery Repairs

My craft background and qualifications in conservation ensures that practical solutions are found for traditional building repairs which are acceptable to professional and craftsman alike.

Traditional materials for conservation work can be obtained so that building repairs may be harmoniously carried out.

Design - Sensitive Solutions

Traditional methods of construction offer sound solutions. I can provide a design service for new developments, conversions, extensions and alterations, specialising in traditional construction and details, particularly where a listed building or its setting is affected.

The need to expand and adapt old buildings calls for a designer with respect and sensitivity
